How to Sell Group Courses with LearnDash and WooCommerce
Selling individual course seats to one learner at a time is straightforward. But when an organization wants to buy 25 seats of a course bundle with a single purchase, you hit a wall. LearnDash was built for individual enrollment, and WooCommerce alone does not know how to manage group seat allocations or assign group leaders and trainees. This guide walks through every option available, the pain points of each, and the most efficient path to selling group courses at scale.
The Core Problem
LearnDash has a native Groups feature that lets you bundle users and assign courses. What it lacks is a way to sell those groups through WooCommerce. Out of the box, you can create a group manually in the admin, add users one by one, and assign courses. That works for five groups with pre-purchased manual invoicing. It does not work for fifty who want to check out with Stripe like they do on every other e-commerce store.
Every solution on the market exists to bridge this single gap: connecting a WooCommerce purchase to the automatic creation of a LearnDash group with the right courses, the right number of seats, and the right group leader assigned.

Option 1: LearnDash Group Registration (LDGR)
LearnDash’s own Group Registration add-on requires the LearnDash WooCommerce Integration add-on (paywalled behind LearnDash 5 subscription — not available to new customers on lower plans). It adds a “Group Product” type to WooCommerce that creates a group on purchase.
How it works:
- You create a Group Product in WooCommerce and link it to LearnDash courses
- A customer buys it and a LearnDash group is auto-created with the buyer as Group Leader
- The group has X seats, and the Group Leader can enroll users from a front-end dashboard
Pain points:
- No front-end management dashboard for group leaders beyond basic user enrollment
- Cannot sell the same product as both individual and group from one page — you need separate products
- No bulk discounting or tiered pricing
- Adding seats triggers a new WooCommerce order but the integration is clunky
- Limited reporting for group leaders
Option 2: Uncanny Groups for LearnDash
Uncanny Owl’s Uncanny Groups for Learndash solution is the current market leader and the most feature-complete option available.
How it works:
- Adds two WooCommerce product types: “LearnDash Group Course” and “LearnDash Group License”
- Customers can build custom group licenses (pick courses X number of seats) via a front-end “Buy Courses” page
- Or you can create pre-configured license products in admin
- Full front-end group management dashboard for group leaders
Pain points:
- Expensive: $249/year for a single site
- Complex setup: Requires configuring separate or duplicated product types, group pages, enrollment rules, and WooCommerce settings across multiple screens
- No single-product hybrid: You still need separate products for individual vs group sales — customers cannot toggle between “Buy for myself” and “Buy Group Seats” on the same product page
- Subscription limitations: Group leaders cannot add courses to groups from subscription-based licenses (only seats)
- Group Leader Dashboard could use a refresh: Older style dashboard that may look out of place on modern Learndash sites
- Extremely bloated installation: Installs numerous autoload options, css and subscriptions nags
Option 3: LearnDash Groups Plus
A leaner alternative that covers the basics.
Pain points:
- Less mature plugin with fewer integrations
- Limited bulk discount options
- Front-end dashboard is functional but basic compared to Uncanny
- Smaller user base means fewer community resources and tutorials
Option 4: LearnDash Max
LearnDash’s own premium tier solution includes group management. Comes in both plugin (self-hosted) and cloud hosted varieties with various pricing systems.
Pain points:
- $699/year minimum — prohibitively expensive for most course creators
- Locks you into LearnDash’s hosting ecosystem
- No WooCommerce integration — uses LearnDash’s native payment system only by default
- Cannot customize checkout flow or use WooCommerce extensions
Option 5: Group License Manager
Disclosure: Group License Manager is our product. We built it because every existing option shared the same fundamental flaw – they treat group sales as a completely separate workflow from individual sales.
What makes it different:
- Single product page sells both ways: A customer can choose “Buy for myself” (individual course enrollment) or “Buy for my team” (group seats) from the same product page at checkout
- Bundled course products sell both ways: Have a popular bundle with 3 Learndash courses? Sell the same bundle as group seats – same product – no further setup needed
- Built in WooCommerce MinMax: No separate plugin needed. Set minimum and/or maximum quantities for group seats per product. Individual version of course can be set to 1 – no conflicts – all handled.
- Built in WooCommerce Skip Cart: Avoid cart bounces – inbuilt skip cart to checkout option, global and per product.
- Fast group manager dashboard: Built for performance, not bloat. Group leaders can manage seats, add users, and view stats from a clean front-end interface
- Customizable appearance: Inherit buttons from theme or design your own, set global product button labels and overide at product level if desired.
- Learndash groups synced: Group license shows and can be managed from the Learndash Groups page – syncs seat number, trainees and status with Group Manager dashboard
- Auto provisioning: Seat allocation and Group Leader creation happen automatically on order completion
- Pricing: Free tier for up to 3 individual courses with all features – no gating. Pro at $59.95/yr includes unlimited seats, course bundles, volume discount tiers, and email notifications. Agency at $129.95/yr covers up to 10 sites
Trade-offs:
- Newer plugin with a smaller user base (though actively developed)
- Fewer third-party integrations than Uncanny (for now)
Common Pain Points Across All Solutions
| Pain Point | Impact | Best Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Guest checkout blocked | Requires account creation, increases cart abandonment | Use social login or one-click registration plugins |
| Order status dependency | Groups not created until “Completed” status | Force auto-complete for virtual products. Uncanny has a built-in setting for this |
| Separate product catalogs | Individual learners and groups see different products | WPGator’s single-product approach eliminates this entirely |
| Group leader admin access | Some solutions require giving group leaders wp-admin access | Choose a solution with a full front-end dashboard (Uncanny or WPGator) |
| Seat counting disputes | Group leaders over-enroll and administrators don’t notice | Enable strict seat enforcement and “Buy More Seats” prompts |
Recommendations
If you have a simple setup (sell one course, one group size) and don’t need a group leader dashboard: LDGR is free and works.
If you need the full enterprise feature set and have the budget: Uncanny Groups is proven and comprehensive.
If you want a single product to sell both individually and as group seats, with a fast dashboard and a reasonable price: Group License Manager solves the problem that no other plugin addresses — the hybrid single-product/group checkout.
Summary
The market for LearnDash group sales has matured significantly, but every solution prior to WPGator Learndash Group Manager treats group enrollment as a separate store, a separate product type, and a separate checkout flow. The real step forward is eliminating that separation entirely, letting course creators offer individual and group pricing from one product page with one checkout. That is the gap we built Group License Manager to fill.
